Burma (Union of Myanmar)

Burma has the largest amount of land of any country in South East Asia, it is currently controlled by one of the most corrupt military dictatorships in in the world.  The international world is disputing what name the country should go by, but if you ask one of the 56 million Burmese people, they will say they are from Bama or Myanma.

In 1988 a military regime called "The State Law and Order Council" seized the country and began persecuting opposition groups, students, human rights activists and the minority ethnic groups that have inhabited the last for more than 3000 years.  In 1989 they declared that English speaking nations should refer to it as "The Union of Myanmar", but the military that has taken the country is not recognized internationally as a legitimate government.  in 1997 the council changed it's name to the SPDC, "The State Peace and Development Council."  With it's new name it continues to murder and enslave indigenous hill tribes and oppress the Burmese people.

This is the flag and coat of arms of the SPDC "State Peace and Development council."

The land has always been amazing location, with mountains and shorelines and numerous natural resources as well as access to culture and goods from India, China, and Thailand.

My time in Myanmar as been very limited, I have crossed the boarder from Thailand at 2 points, and only spend the day there on the times I have been.  The SPDC does not allow travel across the country by land  (for many numerous reasons) so anyone wishing to travel to Burma must do it by plane if they want to go past the boarder towns and can only go to a few select locations.  On this map I have included the Thai city name on the right, and the Burmese town name on the left.
