Luang Prabang

Overview ~ One Day ~ Around Town ~ Oldest Temple ~ Waterfall ~ Whiskey Village

This road goes along the Mae Kham river, with cobblestone walkways that are a popular place for everyone to go for an evening walk, or to just sit by the river.  This walk way goes down until the junction of the Mae Kham and Mae Kong, and as the Mae Kong turns back the other way, there's a lot of river-side restaurants.

Average looking Lao shop, typical for Luang Prabang, open store froms, usually with residential rooms on the 1 or 2 floors above.

This is a more traditional Lao shop, wooden structure with a metal roof that starts to rust eventually, women sitting out front relaxing while their assortment of available fabrics blows in the wind.  Often times there isn't much of an indoor part to the shop, because that's where they live.

There seem to always be nice relaxing little spots to grab food or drinks and get out of the sun, hiding behind plants.

Here's a sample of an old-style Lao house.  Usually, even if they are not over water they are still elevated.  Traditionally, and you see it more in Thailand, they raise it to keep animals and insects out, and the dogs and chickens usually hang out under there.

This is a rice field that's about a 20 minute walk from the center of town that's being turned into a new sub division.  This is about 3 minutes walk from the main paved road coming into town from the mountains, so once there's a few more houses here the streets will probably get paved as well.
